Injuries rarely occur out of nowhere - there are always clues to explain why.
Sometimes these are obvious: the athlete suddenly jumped from running 20 km a week to 50 km, or the athlete turned their snazzy carbon racing shoes into daily trainers - classic examples of training load spikes or inappropriate footwear.
Other times, the training program has been followed to a T, no obvious train terrors have been made, yet the athlete still got injured. In these situations the clues may be less obvious. Maybe the athlete is a new parent and pushing through training on little sleep, or they are under immense work stress and carrying an extra burden on their nervous system.
Whatever the situation, asking “Why?” And identifying what contributed to an injury is powerful. It not only guides recovery in the present but also helps reduce the risk of repeating the same mistakes in the future 🧐
